Things I have learnt this Christmas...
* It doesn't have to be stressful - especially if the husband cooks on the big day.
* It's really quite nice to sing Christmas Carols around the piano like you're in an old black and white movie, drinking mulled wine..."So bring us some figgy pudding..."
* I do believe in the magic of Father Christmas. You have to believe to receive, right?
* My children have a ridiculous amount of toys. Too many. It makes me feel guilty.
* Relatives are best in short and sweet bursts.
* There is such a thing as overstaying your welcome.
* There is such a thing as too many turkey dinners.
* Sprouts are unsociable.
* Someone will always end up in tears on Christmas Day. Thankfully this year it wasn't me. Instead, an overwhelmed four year old.
* Never go sales shopping with your husband. It's miserable.
* Do get someone to look after the kids, go shopping with husband and spend more time having a lovely long lunch with a couple of glasses of wine, when you should be buying nappies and mince meat.
* Don't eat too many mince pies/sausages wrapped in bacon/brandy cream/stilton or your step mother will point out your mince pie belly and say - "Is there something you want to tell us?"
* Go out on New Years Eve. Especially to a wedding. Get drunk with your husband and mime along in a big circle to Auld Lang Syne. It sure beats watching Lenny Henry making a t*t of himself on Hootenanny.
* Don't let husband take too much time off work. He needs to go back before the squabbling begins.
* Don't let the last day before going back to work/school (where moods are fraught) make you forget about the wonderful, relaxing Christmas you have just had where you wanted to give your husband long deep kisses under the mistletoe.
* Remember that Christmas is just one day.
* And that a piece of chocolate orange solves everything, for everybody (except possibly nut allergy sufferers...)

Happy New Year CTTF! Nice to see you back in the land of the bloggers.
I was ready to go back to work today - I was missing the routine, and also my girls had started getting tetchy. Back to school!
I agree that chocolate oranges are the answer to many of lifes problems.
Hello Supermum - I have been pretty slack at blogging lately. As I have with many things (housework, washing...)
Nice to be back.
Yes, that tetchiness, it makes me dread the 6 week summer holidays!
Chocolate oranges are...simply...YUM!
Very wise!
(although I have to admit to rather liking sprouts!)
All so, so true, CTTF.
And as for sprouts, I read in the newspaper yesterday that some gorillas at a zoo had been banned from having sprouts....because of the malodorous after effects! Sums it up, really.
Mud - I love sprouts too.
It's the after effects I am not quite so fond of...How are things btw??
Nappy - Well, I never even realised gorillas ate sprouts. See, another thing I have learnt. The thought of gorilla's with bad sprout wind makes me heave. So thanks for that thought...
I could not wait for my husband to go back to work between Christmas and new year and neither could he!
why are people so rotten about sprouts? Yes, Husband stayed off work just that bit too long. And I couldn't get the kids off to school today quick enough.
all the same, it was a good christmas.
Good blog, CTTF, with very profound listings.
How apropos. Hubby may have stayed home just a wee bit too long here as well...
And I just know I gained at least 5lbs of chocolate fat.
Happy New Year

Knitty, Vintage and Rosy
Oh so true.
I haven't got a job so I've definately stayed away from work too long. and my children were absolute little gremlins yesterday.
Christmas is just one day? Pah! It lasts a month in my house. Gah!
*parp*
Or at least twelve days, as in the song. And if you're missing it already, you can do it all again the day after tomorrow - it's Christmas Day in the Orthodox church! Hooray!
Happy New Year to you.
I thought the 2 weeks whizzed by and am not nearly ready to be back at school, although I bet other parents are glad I am !
Hey.. she's back..missed ya! Love the Christmas list and love my sprouts with bacon a la Nigella! Do not love the sprouts with bacon when Other Half starts to process them if you know what I mean! Your Christmas sounds lovely and we did the shopping day with long lunch - makes pressie buying a pleasure! I had another Howard sighting the other day. Was walking towards M & S where there happened to be a huge poster in their window with the Take That ad campaign... and who is walking towards me head down with his youngest in tow... the H meister! No wonder he kept his head down... poor chap! Still haven't plucked up the courage to say hello because I know if I open my mouth I will just squeak at him!
"A piece of chocolate orange solves everything" - amen to that CTTF!
I think hubby couldn't wait to get back to work for a moment's peace. The children went back to school/nursery today and were like feral animals up until then!
By the way, did Dave F break wind on your blog? I wouldn't stand for that!
Mary T - But it doesn't mean we don't love them, right?
Hello lovely Jenny Smith - Glad you had a good Christmas. I do love sprouts! Honest. It's just they are unsociable come around 8pm...in a small living room with no ventilation...
Happy New Year to you too Lisa. You hold onto your choccie fat, you'll need it in these current temperatures, just to keep warm...
Dave - Excuse you. Did you just break wind on my blog??
The Dotteral - Oh no thank you! Good job I am not a member of the Orthodox Church, I can only cope with Christmas once a year and with a break of over 300 days inbetween...
Auntie - glad you had such a fab Xmas for it to whizz by. Sorry you have to go back to school to teach our children. But we neeed you!
That girl - well, bless you, I missed you too! Look at you fancy pants, with your Nigella sprouts! Thought about it but knew 90 year old Grandma would moan...So, tell me, what are house prices like around your area, hmm? Could do with bumping into Howard at M&S, would make the days less droll...
Tara - Loving the thought of your feral children. And yes, I think Dave did parp on my blog. He obviously feels quite at home..
am with you on the chocolate orange... but one piece??! I was particularly stressed with a visitor outstaying their welcome i had to take time out and go upstairs and eat a whole one (a substitute for alcohol)
PS Robbie should never be allowed back into Take That - NO WAY. They are just fine without him.
Christmas is still going on in our house as I can't face taking the tree down. I am going to wait till the weekend, force everyone to get involved and wallop the first one to break another bauble!
There's an award waiting for you over at my place!
* Santa is for Christmas, chocolate is for life
Happy New Year Confused, may 2009 be just as confusing!
MH
Here here!
i missed my chocolate orange this year....
I missed the chocolate orange this year too but made up for it with an ABUNDANCE of sprouts. PARP.
Anyway - I have tagged you with a 7 things meme ... sorry!
elsie - hello my lovely. It's been too long! Congrats on the bump! And the book deal. What a great year for you! And agreed on all counts of what you said. Yes to a whole choccie orange, and agreed Robbie should not rejoin the glorious man band that is Take That.
Expat Mum - please tell me the tree is down? If not, you may as well leave til next Christmas?
Supermum - YOu are such a sweetie. Thanks for my award. I will pop over and grab it now!
MH - so you're alive?! I was beginning to wonder if there was death by brussel sprout or something. Popping over to yours later to read your latest offering. Better be funny MH...
Mum/Mom - hello lovely lady. Let's see what the birthday fairy brings you, eh? Hope you are feeling better
x
Laura - Excuse you! You and Dave Fowler parping on my blog, I mean...!
